The Matterhorn
BackFrom Zermatt .....the MATTERHORN. A tour of the Italian Lakes Garda, Como and Maggiore also provided the opportunity to travel into the Swiss mountain resort of Zermatt from where a 40-minute mountain train journey through aromatic Stone Pine and Larch, led to the 3089m higb station of Gornergrat and impressive views of perhaps the most familiar mountain in the European Alps and Switzerland's most famous landmark, the mighty 4,478m Matterhorn. Switzerland's highest open-air station on the Gornergrat Bahn electric railway opened for business in 1898, hauling tourists from Zermatt to this scenic platform with such impressive views of the mountain that derives its name from the German words 'Matte', translating to valley or meadow, and 'Horn' which means peak. With time to spend at Lake Lugano or just to wander around the modern, trendy and stylish city, the tour included a visit to a site of one of Switzerland's most famous exports at the Caslano chocolate factory!
