The show travels the globe searching for answers to age-old questions as well as modern day mysteries. "I do some stories for the first season that are on archaeology that are looking at let's say Timbuktu, the city of gold - did it really exist? Gladiators - what were they really like? Were they slaves, were they celebrities? So those are the ancient history stories but then I moved to East Africa to do a story on elephants. They're currently attacking humans in record numbers. What's going on there?," said Bernstein who hosted The History Channel's "Digging for the Truth". The series also tries to answer one of the biggest riddles of them all - was there life on Mars? Bernstein spends time with NASA scientists to explore that question and gains unprecedented access to areas rarely seen by the general public. But the first episode takes Bernstein to Rome, Pompeii, Ephesus and Tunisia to explore the lives of gladiators. He interviews archaeologists and takes fighting lessons at a gladiator school. Bernstein, who looks like a modern-day Indiana Jones, is the president and CEO of the Boulder Outdoor Survival School. He has almost 20 years of wilderness experience and a degree from Cornell University, where he majored in anthropology and psychology. He says he never dreamed of working in television but likes the fact that he can reach so many people at once and teach them about history and the world. He is also an executive producer of the series The series hits 15 countries from Armenia to Peru and premieres in the United States on the Discovery Channel on August 18. The series will air internationally in the Spring of 2009.
