In Cannes Film Festival-2008 this movie was screened under the classic film category. Incidentally, Guide had also been selected as India's official entry to the Oscars in 1965.This movie has achieved this recognition . I am so happy for this.

you can have the license to modify something if were your own. in this case it would be an adaptation with huge liberties taken without the consent of the author.

yes, but Vijay Anand, the director, significantly change the story line - particularly the ending. RK Narayan's book does not have the explicit religious overtone that is seen at the end of the movie. In fact, Narayan was so mad that he disavowed the adaptation. Vijay Ananad always maintaned that as a director, he has the license to modify the story as he sees fit to enrich it.
