Wow, the pattern of folk songs continue. The best rhythms are the most violent and terrible lyrically.

I, too remember this song as a young girl. My father would sing it. I guess back then all songs were based on true stories or happenings, rather than just words.

i just saw charlie louvin at a free concert last year in tampa. he's a very gracious man and it was an honor to meet him and hear him sing.

It's a ballad of a true story which could be traced as far back, possibly to 1700 in England. It is not about Knoxville, TN. The original title was Wexford Girl. The story is too old to know why the murder occured. It is still a haunting ballad.

I too remember hearing this as a child. It also reminds me of a much better time in my life. Back when America was Home of the Free Home of the Brave, and the future looked bright.
