french women keeping their looks? ardant is quite ugly, terrible even at a young age in fact.
as for game of wits, this entire movie is a exercise on tolerance...for stupidity. unrealistic caricatures in a fantasy world...people don' talk like that, never have, never will. it was like i was 15 years old again, going to parties hoping to engage in witty conversation only to find out well formed witticisms only occur in writing and movies.

She is hosting a dinner, and states that there are 13 guests, unlucky. So solve this, she hosts a game of wits, and the least witty must leave when dinner starts, so she intentionally distracts him in order to shame him.

why poor guy? il faut voir ce film en entier, Berling en petit nobliau provincial s'en sort fort bien dans les jeux d'esprit de cette noblesse de cour versaillaise , il n'est pas là pour ça mais pour assainir ses marais putrides et n'a d'autre choix que de se préter au jeu. Le ridicule qui tue n'a jamais été aussi vrai dans cette France fin XVIII°, heureusement à la fin, il apprendra "l'humour" so british moins tuant mais plus décapant, pour les fans de Rochefort, voir le mari de la coiffeuse.
