I honestly think the fact that the band was fairly dysfunctional in regard to their relationships with each other is how and why they wrote so many honest and moving songs in two years

They weren't necessarily sad about the North. It was more John's passive aggressive reaction to Michelle's constant whining about how cold she always was because she didn't bring any sweaters with her when they left California. Kinda like how"I Saw Her Again"is really about John finding out that Michelle and Denny had been "intimate".As a matter of fact the band tried to disown this song because it was inspired by bickering. That's where the flute solo came from. But that's a whole 'nother story
